Web Design, Content Management System (CMS) - Joomla, Brand Identity, Logo Design, Search Engine Optimisation
The Defence Industry Skills Unit is a newly formed government department under the initiative of Challenger TAFE (Technical and Further Education). The DISU’s main role is to ensure the state’s growing defence industry receives a sustainable supply of skilled workers.
DogHouse Media was awarded this project in late 2007 and was tasked with establishing the department’s logo, brand identity, website and online Content Management System. With the use of leading open source technology, we created a rich online presence for the department.
The logo and corporate colour scheme were created to reflect the department’s key focus of addressing the increasing demand of maritime workers while at the same time conveying a softer tone than the traditional stark military motifs. In particular, the logo intentionally mimics Challenger TAFE’s design while simultaneously illustrating and symbolising the gradual progression of a student.
Using a PHP-based, open source CMS called Joomla, we were able to deploy a dynamic web application that enabled DISU staff to easily manage their website. All website content, images, menu items and even permissions are easily updateable through an intuitive administrative interface.
The initial project brief specifically outlined the need to develop a website that was not only maintainable but also expandable. Over the course of the next year, the department is looking to grow the website by adding Defence related courses and interactive training content. With this in mind, we set up a modular system that allows for future customisation and long-term maintainability.
