Content Management Systems

Drupal and Joomla

We use two different open-source content management system (CMS) packages, Drupal and Joomla, and select the one that best meets the needs of our client.

Drupal is a content management framework that goes beyond the basic principle of a CMS and provides a complex development environment for programmers to extend and modify the core behaviour. This means that Drupal sites are incredibly flexible, resulting in very few restrictions in terms of what the CMS can or cannot do.

Joomla is slightly less flexible but makes up for this with its ease of development. It also presents a very mature administrative back end that clients can easily pick up and start using.

Both CMS software systems are PHP based and therefore, are not tied into our servers or infrastructure. This means our clients can host their own site wherever and however they choose. By developing our software using Open Source platforms, there are many advantages. First of all, in CMS terms, you gain access to a developer community that numbers in the tens of thousands. No commercial developer has anywhere near that large a number of in-house staff contributing to their product. You also gain freedom and you control the entirety of your source code, there’s nothing stopping you from taking your site elsewhere. We don't believe in trying to tie our customers in with underhanded licensing agreements or shady hosting practices our customers stick by us because we do a good job!

Additionally, by using Open Source CMS packages, you’re saving money. Some commercially licensed systems cost tens of thousands of dollars for the software alone, and that’s before any customisation. If you’re looking for a CMS that addresses your needs, and a solution provider that supports you every step of the way, then look no further than DogHouse Media.
